Fix an Immigration Problem

Something went wrong with your immigration case. Let’s understand what happened.

Not every immigration problem fits neatly into one category. You may not know whether you need a waiver, a motion, a FOIA request, a new application, or a careful review of your immigration history. Our job is to help you slow the situation down, identify the issue, and understand what next step may be available.

When this page may apply

  • Your immigration case was denied.
  • You missed immigration court or may have an old order.
  • You do not know what happened in an old immigration case.
  • Immigration says there is a problem with your history.
  • You filed before and something went wrong.
  • You are afraid to file because of something in your past.
  • You need to review your immigration record before deciding what to do.

The first step is clarity

Before deciding what to file, it is important to understand what happened. We may need to review prior applications, notices, decisions, court records, consular documents, or immigration files. In some cases, a FOIA request may be needed to obtain records from the government.

Prior denials

A denial does not always mean the case is over. The next step depends on why the case was denied, when it was denied, and whether there may be a way to refile, respond, appeal, reopen, or pursue a different option.

Old orders or missed court

If you have an old removal order, deportation order, or missed immigration court hearing, it is important to review the case carefully before taking action. There may be risks. There may also be possible options depending on the facts, timing, notice, eligibility, and immigration history.

FOIA and records review

Sometimes the biggest problem is not knowing what the government has in your file. A FOIA request can help obtain immigration records so your case can be reviewed more accurately.
